Poem #29 Thirty Poems in Thirty Days

To Remember
Memorial Day

Remember to honor their memory

Remember the names
Of the named and the unnamed

Revolutionary War

Elisha Holman of Sutton
in Colonel Ebenezer Learned's Regiment
Jedediah Healy of Worcester
Medad Moody of Amherst who marched to Mosses' Creek
Phineas Goodheau of Bradford who marched to Cambridge
—62 miles in 5 days

Civil War

“360,000 Union soldiers died.
The Confederacy lost 260,000.”

Too many wars to count
Wars with place names
World Wars

Too many lives lost
Too many limbs lost
Too many minds shattered
Too many lives shattered
Remember all the dead
All the wounded
All the lost
All the shattered

When will it stop?
