Advice to My Daughter

Love will surround you

The day slips into night
and you slip in and out of sleep.
It isn't happening neatly
with clear edges.

Rewind time, two months
before they began to delve,
before a test—like a stack of cards—
set off probes, scans, consultations.

They sought offshoots
tributaries, errant cells.
Under a glare of light
they found what they suspected

and aborted surgery.

Then fight.
