A Different Palette

She's ninety-two and still
paints with bold colors
on forty-inch square canvases
speckled with lamp black.
These spots, she says, like
the ones I see skitter
across my eyes, remind me to hurry
and paint the crocuses
and cattails at the water's edge
before the hues fade, whiten
and reassemble into neutral shades.
