Sabbath Morning at the Coffee House

Tom's white beard rests on his shirt.
He hunkers over a newspaper.
Later he will offer opinions
siphoned from his reading.
An English teacher from another town
uses rubrics to correct essays.
What happens to words that refuse to conform?

A man wearing rabbit ears orders an onion bagel.
A girl in a pink tutu skirt crawls under a table.
A couple show off a new baby.
Two people split a sandwich.

Lily, who swallows books whole
rests her hands on her face .
Her book remains closed.
A man with serpent tattoos on his arms,
a horseshoe crab on his ankle, two
black widow spiders on his neck orders ice tea.

Background music fills the space left vacant when talk wavers.
Next week the same rituals and new specials.

  1. I like this one. Sounds like a 3 ring circus at a coffee shop. I like observing people also so I can relate.
