A Surrealist Alters a Dream

Waking up to a nightmare—
trees tethered to the ground
with a tattered shoestring,
leaves painted magenta
and dipped in glitter
grass rolling like sagebrush
across a western landscape.

In the center a gate
to a secret garden
guarded by an iguana,
an ibex and three tortoises.

At first sorrow,
then resignation,
and then hope.

The surrealist
mapped out
an alternate
scenerio.
