Shaker Spirit Drawing

“Between 1837 and 1850 ("known as the Era of Manifestations") the Shakers composed (or were the recipients of) "hundreds of … visionary drawings … really [spiritual] messages in pictorial form…"
— Edward Deming Andrews

Some went “laboring for a gift”
unwinding God’s word
in watercolour arabesques,
shewbread on a golden table.
Plumb trees blazed with angel’s light.

On sacred sheets
their drawings
imbued with symmetry
like an apple
on the spoke of a corer
They dreamt of heavenly spheres
while drawing their savior’s
Wings of Freedom.

  4. There is magic in your words. They favor the tongue and flow so easily. Reading "Shaker Spirit Drawing" aloud gave me much pleasure. Good job!

  5. Have long believed that a genuine sense of the spirit, must evolve into a genuine drive to express that in an act of creation. Thank you for confirming that with your own.
