To Write a Novel

When the characters are really alive
before their author, the latter does nothing
but follow them...
--Luigi Pirandello

This amassing of words
detail upon detail, forming a story
transforming the ordinary

She writes twenty pages
unyokes her characters, they conspire to leave
this amassing of words

She recounts a memory of ghosts
enumerating disappearances
detail upon detail, forming a story

Her characters yawn
abandon her plot and depart
transforming the ordinary

  1. This is a wonderful poem. Thanks for taking a break from writing your novel to offer this clever cascade. As always, I so enjoy your poetry! I love the idea of the characters conspiring to leave the amassing of words - and after just twenty pages. Where's the loyalty, eh?

  2. Very good...I really like the idea of the characters having their own ideas about how the story will go...

  4. Linda,
It is so true of writing. Seems the characters do at times have a mind of their own. Nice form.

  5. Oh this is so good. Our characters do take on a life of their own, don't they? You did well with the cascade.

  6. You have pointed out the reason I don't often write fiction. I'm sure any characters I created would argue endlessly and the story would never end. This is a wonderful take on the cascade form, and really works well with it,

  10. Hope you NaNo novel's settled into the traces. It's amazing when they come alive, though.
