Waiting For the Unexpected

Clay pots fired in ashes
as red heat cracks  glazes
Blackened lines spread erratic patterns
Slender herons pose on one leg

Chalk white gauze dipped in plaster
gains form when draped
around a  skeletal  armature

Impatiently
insects scratch
against wire mesh
stretched taut within a frame
and seek entrance
A place to break through

This afternoon
I stared out a train window
at water streaked sidewalks,
a jigsaw of unfamiliar streets

We edged into a station
thickened with people

I held onto my pole and recited the day
Firing pots in the morning
and reading graffiti
on station walls
in the afternoon

the equinox won't come
I'm just metering out time
