I Can't Hear What They're Saying

And then the other
evening, I heard the story again.
A Language by Susan Stewart

You told me about the woman
who rummages through trash cans
looking for lottery tickets, half smoked stubs,
empty cans, and scraps of food.
You don't get it. She's looking for a tomorrow.

Last night I watched two women
on a dumpster scavenger hunt
outside of McDonalds, the one on Eighth Avenue.
They filled a bag with half- eaten burgers, a few fries
and left with a handful of weariness.
