D is for Dangling

We went to Great Meadow Preserve to take photos of the local denizens and flowers. After two hours and about 150 photos a woman walked up to us and said, "Last week I went on a walk here with a man who is a butterfly expert. Would you like to see huge caterpillars?"

Who can turn down that invitation. So we followed her until we arrived at a cherry tree.

The caterpillars were dangling from the leaves and were indeed quite the largest I had ever seen. According to her half remembered name and some sleuthing on the internet I believe they are cecropia moth caterpillars.
